The Department of Radiology, University of Cambridge, is pleased to offer a PhD studentship, funded by Cancer Research UK (CRUK), to start in October 2014. The area of research will be the imaging of ovarian cancer metabolism using hyperpolarized carbon-13 magnetic resonance imaging. We invite applications for this studentship leading to a PhD in the University of Cambridge. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who wishes to join a small group of people working on an exciting new area of medical imaging. Hyperpolarised carbon-13 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a new tool to study the metabolism of carbon-containing molecules. Cambridge has acquired one of the first devices for human imaging; trials will commence later in 2014 and will be used to study the metabolism of hyperpolarised carbon-13 labelled pyruvate and fumarate in human cancer. This studentship will develop the technique in ovarian cancer, a genetically and morphologically heterogeneous disease, where there is a need for new imaging to improve patient care. Patients will undergo MRI prior to debunking surgery and after chemotherapy. The surgical specimens will be co-registered with imaging and the biochemical and histological measurements derived at surgery will be compared to the signal generated from the metabolism of the hyperpolarised molecules; this will be used to further understand the biophysical basis of this new imaging technique. We will also study whether this method can be used as an early marker of treatment response to improve patient outcome. The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Radiology, University of Cambridge. Queries should be made to Dr Ferdia Gallagher (fag1000@cam.ac.uk). The project involves a close collaboration with the Addenbrooke's Hospital NHS MR medical physics group (Dr Martin Graves) and the Department of Oncology/CRUK Cambridge Institute laboratories of Prof Kevin Brindle (molecular imaging) and Dr James Brenton (functional genomics of ovarian cancer). Please see: http://radiology.medschl.cam.ac.uk/departmental-staff/academic-staff/dr-ferdia-a-gallagher/ Candidates will be expected to have a strong CV having completed, or about to complete, a degree relevant to medical imaging (e.g. biomedical sciences, cancer biology, medicine, physics, computer science) but we shall consider all suitably qualified applicants. The funding for UK/EU nationals covers stipend, University Composition fees and College fees for 3 years, with the potential for an extension to a fourth year. Overseas applicants are eligible to apply, but would be required to self-fund the cost difference of University Composition fees for overseas students compared with UK/EU students (approximately £15,700 per year for 3 years).
