1. Applied Linguistics. Its Subject and Task. The Correlation of Applied Linguistics with General Linguistics and other disciplines. a) Applied Linguistics - the theoretical and empirical investigation of real-world problems in which language is a central issue. b) Its Subject and Task - Applied Linguistics is using what we know about (a) language, (b) how it is learned, and (c) how it is used, in order to achieve some purpose or solve some problem in the real world. c) ALx vs GLx – GLx is concerned with the study of language in general, whereas the ALx's subject is the language in real-world (Chomsky). d) Other disciplines: - sociolinguistics - relation b/n language and society; - functional linguistics - language as means of communicatio, how people use it; - corpus linguistics - systematic analysis and description of databanks of l-ge which occurred in use. 2.
