Opening Statement 1. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, and thank you for being here today. My name is Valeria Diaconu and I'll be the lead prosecutor in this case. 2. You're here today to hear evidence in the trial of Mr. James Stone, who stands accused of intentional harm to body integrity or health. You're going to hear the defense's side of the story, and you're going to be told a lot of things. You're going to hear a sad story about Mr. Stone. 3. You're going to feel sorry for Mr. Stone. The defense wants you to hear his story and feel sorry for him, because the defense wants you to believe that his crime is justified and done by imprudence. 4. But that's not how the law works. There's a statue right outside this building of a woman holding a pair of scales. That statue is a beautiful woman- a woman named Justice. And if you go and look at that statue, you'll see that Justice is wearing a blindfold. It's because Justice doesn't care what Mr. Stone looks like. Justice doesn't care about his sad story. Justice cares only about the law. 5. I care about the law, too. It's my job to uphold the law. And in this courtroom, I'm going to show you that Mr. Stone broke the law. He broke a very clear law that's written in black and white . A law that everyone knows and understands. 6. Mr. Stone caused the harm of Mrs. Marry s health and she lapses into a coma, lt doesn't matter that this was done by a joke. It matters that he did intentional harm to body integrity or health . As members of the jury, it's your job to make sure he pays for that crime. It's your job to be blind, like Justice because that's the only way we can be sure that justice will be served . 7. I'm going to ask you to serve justice to Mr. Stone at the end of this trial, and I know that you're going to see that it gets done. Because I'm going to prove that Mr. Stone broke the law, and at the end of the day that's all that matters . 8. Thank you.
