Negotiation is a dialogue between two or more people or parties intended to reach an understanding, resolve points of difference, to gain advantage for an individual or collective, or to craft outcomes to satisfy various interests. Negotiating involves an element of trade or bargaining – an exchange of one valuable resource for another to enable both parties to achieve a satisfactory outcome. Negotiation occurs in business, non-profit organizations, government branches, legal proceedings, among nations and in personal situations such as marriage, divorce, parenting, and everyday life. In the world of business, negotiating skills are used for a variety of reasons, such as to negotiate a salary or a promotion, to secure a sale, to form a new partnership etc. In business people negotiate with both suppliers and customers. They also negotiate within their organizations, for example with colleagues and team members.
